Insurance Carriers Paid More in TX for Hail Damage After Complaints to State

Last year the Texas Department of Insurance helped more than $32 million to be returned to consumers, and $651,761 of that amount, comes from underpaid hail damage roof claims. This after 524 complaints were filed by consumers against their insurance companies.

“Most insurance companies honor their insurance policies and handle claims properly,” said Jerry Hagins, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Insurance (via Kevin Schwaller of KXAN in Austin). “Occasionally there is a problem and TDI’s Consumer Protection specialists are available to help resolve it. Last year TDI helped return more than $32 million to Texas insurance consumers in the form of additional claims payments and refunds.”

It seems to us that this number is low. It’s not that we don’t believe the TDI; it’s just that if even half of underpaid consumers were, A) able to recognize it when it is happening and, B) able to know who to turn to for help when it does.

In our view, most of the time a claim has been underpaid comes down to a poorly written Xactimate Estimate by the insurance adjuster. Contractors can usually be the ones to help with this if they can simply present a detailed, clear cut, line by line, itemized accounting of every single task necessary for the project in the form of a current priced Xactimate Estimate.

Obviously we can help with this. Stop leaving money on the table and give us a shout! 🙂
